On May 2nd, 2026, between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, A.I.R.A. has activate the Santo André Ship in Ílhavo, Aveiro, inviting radio amateurs and enthusiasts to participate in person or through the special callsign CS5AIRA. The activity was taken place on the 20 and 40 meter bands, VHF and UHF, including connections via the Lusophone LART Network and the QO-100 satellite, facing the technical challenge of installing antennas on board.

The A.I.R.A., Association International Radio Amateur, has promote a special activation on May 2, 2026, from the emblematic Santo André ship in Ílhavo, Aveiro.

This initiative has taken place between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, bringing together amateur radio operators and radio communication enthusiasts in an event that combines technology, history, and the sharing of experiences. The organizers have invited all interested parties to attend in person or participate remotely by contacting the special area code CS5AIRA.

During activation, several communication bands and modes was explored. Operations was planned in the 20 and 40-meter bands, as well as in VHF and UHF, including connection via the Lusofone LART Network and the QO-100 satellite, in SSB, FT8, and SSTV modes. The inclusion of the 20-meter band reinforces the activity, despite the technical challenges associated with installing antennas in a demanding environment marked by the presence of electrical cables and metal structures on the ship.

All participants who have manage to establish contact with the space station will be entitled to a contact certificate, that can be taken in the website of A.I.R.A accompanied by historical information about the Santo André Ship, thus providing an enriching and memorable experience.

This activation represents yet another opportunity to promote amateur radio, encourage community participation, and enhance the value of the national maritime heritage.

A.I.R.A has invited everyone to join us for this special moment, either in person in Ílhavo or via radio waves.
